The Ladyman family arrived in Western Australia from South Australia with brothers Henry and Joseph arriving in Katanning in 1898. The two brothers eventually took up a large area on the Kojonup Road, about 12 miles from the town, which they worked together in the early stages of development, finally separating as each assumed family responsibilities.

Joseph Ladyman set up his share of the land and named it “Woodlands.” He married Miss Hettie Bails, of Adelaide and that is where they resided until the time of their deaths.

After a lengthy period of ill-health, Mr. Joseph Ladyman, of “Woodlands”, Carrolup, passed away at the Katanning Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, aged 66 years, death thus removing from the district one who was universally esteemed and respected.

The late Mr. Joseph Ladyman was South Australian born, and as a young man gave serious thought toward a career in the ministry, actually qualifying as a minister in the Methodist Church in South Australia. The training in the church left its indelible marks upon him in after life, for, in addition to his unswerving keenness in all matters pertaining to his church, he was a splendid public speaker and at one time was urged by his friends in the district to nominate as a representative of the South-East Province in the State Parliament.

With his brother, Henry, Mr. Ladyman arrived at Katanning in 1898, seeking for land, the two brothers eventually taking up a large area on the Kojonup Road, about 12 miles from the town, which they worked together in the early stages of development, finally separating as each assumed family responsibilities, “Wood lands”, as he named his share of the property, being the home to which Mr. Ladyman brought his bride, Miss Hettie Bails, of Adelaide, and where he resided until the time of his death. Mr. Joseph Ladyman was a noted breeder of horses and a recognised judge of horseflesh, and at one time a successful exhibitor of stock in the show ring. Later, he combined sheep breeding with his other activities, and was a member of the Great Southern Sheepbreeders’ Association.

Always interested in affairs which affected the district, he was amongst the earliest members of the Katanning Agricultural Society, was a foundation member of the Primary Producers’ Association, and one of its most active office bearers, and a member of the board of directors of the Katanning Church of England Girls’ School.

He leaves a widow, three sons (Phillip, Allen and Ross) and a daughter, Gwen (Mrs. Walter, of Bridgetown), to mourn, their loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, following an impressive service at the Methodist Church, at which the Rev. R. R. Fleming officiated, and at the graveside, pall-bearers being Messrs. A. Prosser, W. J. Rogers, J. C. Warren, N. B. O’Halloran, P. H. Crossley and W. G. Grover. A. RICHARD (DICK) LADYMAN

CARROLUP.
Farewell to Mr and Mrs Dick Ladyman.

Great Southern Herald
1 July 1944 – P1

For health reasons Mr A. R. Ladyman has been compelled to relinquish farming and he and Mrs Ladyman will take up residence at Middleton Beach, Albany. Their departure will be felt greatly by the Carrolup community as they were amongst the pioneers of the district. Mr Ladyman arrived from South Australia with other members of the family, all of whom settled in and around Carrolup in the late ’90’s.

Some years later he returned to his home State and brought back his bride to share their pretty home at “Kanooka ” the property he developed from its virgin state to its present highly improved condition.

In order to say good-bye to these old friends, the Carrolup folk gave them a farewell evening in the Carrolup Hall on June 16th. Visitors included people from Cherry Tree Pool, Flat Rocks, Katanning and other centres. A musical programme was provided by artists from Katanning, including Mrs Wanke, Mrs Lamp and Miss Watson, who were brought out by the Rev Mr Limb. The evening passed with dancing, community singing and games.

At supper, speakers expressed regret at the pending departure of such old friends and wished Mr Ladyman a speedy return health. Opportunity was taken to present Mr and Mrs Ladyman with a small gift of remembrance from all old friends. Mr Ladyman suitably responded. The function concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.

The daughter of a pioneering family – the Ladyman’s of Carrolup – she came as a bride to the new district of Nyabing (or Nampup, as it was then called) to help her husband make a home in the bush, The large attendance at the service held in the Hall, as well as at the graveside, gave testimony to the esteem in which she was held by all who knew her.
