Broomehill Race Club – INAUGURAL MEETING.

Albany Advertiser
2 May 1906 – P4

The Broomehill Race Club is to be heartily congratulated upon the success of its inaugural meeting, which took place on Wednesday last and was witnessed by a very large number of people, the majority of visitors coming from Katanning, though Kojonup and Tambellup were also well represented. Fine weather prevailed, and an enjoyable day was spent. The racing on the whole was interesting, but there was too much of the bookmaker element present to give punters confidence in their fancies. The double victory of Chainshot, however, was a most popular win, not because he was backed to any great extent, but because he is a local horse and owned by a true sportsman.

Following are the details of the racing:

WEIGHT-FOR-AGE. Five furlongs.

Mr. W. T. Jones’ Siesta – 1
Mr. W. Barrett’s Molly – 2
Mr. A. H. McKenzie’s Irish Hunter – 3
Other starters: Little Nell, Midget, Ditto, Vege.
Won by a head.

GALLOWAY HANDICAP. Five furlongs.

Mr. E. Harvey’s Pardon, 10.7 – 1
Mr. F. Dillon’s Fund, 11.7 – 2
Mr. H. Cowen’s Tom, 7.0 – 3
Other starters: Dawdler, 10.0; Micky Dripping, 9.0; Cugall, 7.0.

BROOMEHILL CUP of £8 10s. One mile and a half.

Mr. A. H. McKenzie’s Chainshot, 7.0 (Fletcher) – 1
Mr. R. C. Treasure’s Gipsy King, 9.7 – 2
Mr. E. Harvey’s Pardon, 7.0 – 3
Other starters: Mainbrace, 11.0; Ikey Mo, 10.0; Falcon, 7.7; Wallace, 7.0.

The field got away well together, Pardon was the first to show out, but Chainshot was in the lead before the judge’s box was reached for the first time and he kept the lead all the way and won comfortably by four lengths. Half a length separated Gipsy King and Pardon.

TRIAL STAKES, WEIGHT-FOR-AGE Six furlongs.

Mr. A. H. McKenzie’s Irish Hunter, 8.11 – 1
Mr. J. L. Duff’s Fire, 8.11 – 2
No other starters.
Won easily.

Broomehill Race Club – ANNUAL MEETING.

Albany Advertiser
9 March 1907 – P4

Officials. – Patron, Hon. Wesley Maley, M.L.C.; president, Mr. E. A. Moseley; vice-presidents: Messrs A. H. McKenzie, A. Koch, E. Moseley, W. H. Sheridan, W. Symons, T. Anderson, R. Anderson, T. McGuire, M. Corbett, F. Wheeler, A. B. Stone, P. Garrity Snr and W. L. Holly; committee: Messrs G. Green, C. Jordan, W. Jamieson, F. Baker and J. Lee; handicapper, Mr. A. Catling; stewards: Messrs. E. W. Steer, T. McGuire and Robinson; judge, Mr. W. Symons; clerk of scales, Mr. W. Jamieson; clerk of course, Mr. G. Green; starter, Mr. M. Corbett; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. H. Sheridan.

The second annual race meeting of the Broomehill Race Club took place on Wednesday. Since the inauguration of the club, a little over 12 months ago, the committee have worked unremittingly, with the result that they now have one of the best courses along the Great Southern line. The course has been cleared for a width of 66 feet and marked out with painted distance posts. The straight has been fenced off on either side for over a quarter of a mile, and a judge’s stand erected. A weighing out paddock has also been fenced in, and, with the undergrowth cleared from the centre, spectators can view a race from start to finish. This is an advantage seldom met with on country racecourses, and certainly no other town on the line can boast of such appointments.

During the coming year it is intended to clear the centre of the course of all trees and, if funds permit, the straight will be grassed and a grandstand erected. If this is done the Broomehill residents will have a course equal to, if not better than, any other town outside Perth or the goldfields. On Wednesday the weather broke clear and fine, and a large number of visitors arrived from Katanning and the neighbouring towns. Fully 400 people assembled to witness the racing. A programme of six events had been prepared and, in every case, large entries were received. Never less than four horses faced the starter, while in two events nine and eleven candidates sported silk, excellent racing and close finishes being the order of the day.

With Jap and Volcano present, the local horses were voted to have very little chance. As things turned out however, neither of these gentlemen gained better than second and third honours. Mr. T. Anderson secured the Cup and Flying Handicap with Ikey Mo, after exciting contests, while the winner of the Trial Stakes and Lady’s Bracelet was supplied by Mr. Jones’ Siesta. The Galloway Handicap fell to Fund, and in the Farmers’ Stakes J. Cunneen’s Banjo gained pride of place. It is safe to say that never before on the Great Southern line have bigger fields and better racing been witnessed.

The spectators were well catered for on the ground. The booth was in the capable hands of Mrs. Sheridan, of the Imperial Hotel, while afternoon tea and lunch were obtainable from Mr. A. Koch, who had charge of the refreshment stall. The committee as a whole are to be congratulated on the success achieved, and it is to be hoped that the meeting of Wednesday will be the forerunner of many such successful gatherings. The arrangements for the day were complete, and the secretary, Mr. W. H. Sheridan deserves special praise for the splendid way in which he discharged his duties.

Following are the details of the racing:

TRIAL STAKES, of 5 sovs., second horse to receive 1 sov. out of stake. One mile.

All the horses got away together, and Molly was the first to show out, followed by Siesta and Banjo, with Patch lying fourth. At the back of the course Siesta took command, and shortly afterwards Banjo passed Molly. Entering the straight Patch moved up to second place. Siesta was never headed and won easily by six lengths from Patch, Banjo being a length away third.

Fund, however, soon made his run and passing the field won, hard held, by two lengths from Lily Secret, who was four lengths ahead of Circus Girl.

BROOMEHILL CUP, handicap of 12 sovs., second horse to receive 2 sovs. out of stake. One mile and a quarter.

T. Anderson’s b g Ikey Mo, 7.12 (Oswald) – 1

Chainshot was the first to show out, with Volcano and Prince Charlie lying next. Entering the straight, Volcano took the lead from Chainshot. Passing the post for the first time, Volcano and Chainshot were at the head of affairs, with Prince Charlie and Ikey Mo next, Jap being last. At the back of the course, Prince Charlie moved up, passing Volcano and Chainshot, and took command. Ikey Mo then moved up to second place and Chainshot cried enough. Entering the straight, all the horses were under the whip and a splendid race resulted in Ikey Mo beating Prince Charlie on the post by half a neck, Jap being four lengths away third.

LADIES’ BRACELET, handicap, of 6 sov., second horse to receive 1 sov. from the stake. To be owned and trained within a radius of 35 miles of the Broomehill Post Office for three months prior to the meeting. Amateur riders, to be approved by the stewards. Six furlongs.

Betting: 6 to 4 on Siesta, evens Fund, 3 to 1 the others.

Siesta jumped away smartly and won all the way, finishing a length and a half in front of Fund, who was a length ahead of Patch. New Guinea and Falcon were never dangerous.

FLYING HANDICAP, of 7 sovs., second horse to receive l sov. out of stake. Six furlongs.

T. Anderson’s b g Ikey Mo, 9.2 (Oswald) – 1

Other starters: Fancywork, Prince Charlie and Falcon.

Betting: Evens Jap, 3 to 1, Fancywork and Ikey Mo, 4 to 1, Prince Charlie, 10 to 1 Falcon. Volcano was barred.

Prince Charlie was left at the post and lost several lengths. A ding-dong go resulted in Ikey Mo finishing in front of Volcano by a neck, with Jap half a length away third. Prince Charlie was only a length away fourth. Falcon and Fancywork were never in the hunt.

FARMERS’ STAKES, handicap of 5 sovs. Second horse to receive l sov. out of stake, and rider of winning horse to receive a trophy value one guinea. For horses that had never won an advertised race or sweep-stake and owned and trained within a radius of 20 miles of the Broomehill Post Office for three months prior to the meeting. Amateur riders.
