Johann Christian Terlich

Johann Christian Terlich was born in Gersdorf, Silesia (Prussia) to Johann Christian and Anna Dorothea (nee Schulz) Terlich on 2 August 1838. He immigrated to South Australia aged 17 years aboard the ‘La Rochelle’ on 3 September 1855. He died in Katanning, Western Australia, on 31 August 1917, aged 79 years. He is buried in the Katanning Cemetery – Plot: Anglican, Lot 27.

Spouses

On the 18 July 1860, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Light Pass, SA, he married Dorothea Christiane FIEDLER who was born at Hahndorf, South Australia, 22 September 1840, and died in Bethel, New South Wales on 31 December 1876 aged 36 years.

The couple had eight children – Anna Maria (1861-1925), Ernst Gustav (1863-1938), Johann Gotthilf (1865-1936), Johanne Christiana (1869-1951), Pauline Martha (1872-1952), Gotthold Alfred (1875-1956), Salome Christiane (Twin) (1876-1876), and Traugott Carl (Twin) (1876-1876)

Following the death of Dorothea, he married Johanne Louise MADER (born 5 November 1852, Light Pass, SA before they moved to Western Australia in 1892. and died on 5 June 1924, in Katanning, Aged 71 years. They also had eight children – Johannes Paul (1878-1916), Sarah Louise (1881-1967), August Otto (1883-1963), Lydia (1886-1969), Beata (1890-1953), Thomas Otto (1892-1975), Walter David (1894-1918) and Elizabeth (1897-1938).

Johann married Dorothea Christiane Fiedler in 1860 in South Australia, and began a family in N.S.W. After Dorothea died in 1876, he returned to South Australia to marry Johanne Louise Mader in 1877. They started Johann’s second family in Western Australia after they arrived at Katanning from NSW in 1892.

Death of an Old Pioneer. — The many friends of Mrs. Terlich will be grieved to learn of the death of her husband, J. C. Terlich, who passed away peacefully on Thursday night during his sleep. Mr. Terlich, who was 79 years of age, was a pioneer of this district, having settled at Marracoonda about 25 years ago, coming from N.S.W. to this State. Mrs. Terlich, three sons and four daughters are left to mourn their loss.

TERLICH. – The friends of the late Johann Christian Terlich are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, the Anglican portion of the Katanning Cemetery. The funeral is appointed to leave his residence, Amherst Street, Katanning, at 3 p.m. to-morrow (Sunday).
