Great Gathering of the Clans for Katanning Championships.
Mrs. A. H. Parkes Captures Great Southern Open and Close Titles.

ASSOCIATES drawn from all the affiliated clubs along the Great Southern, from Albany to Pingelly and from Perth to Goomalling, brought their impedimenta of golf battle to Katanning last week to participate in this popular carnival.

The Katanning associates’ committee, headed by the president, Mrs. Ross Anderson, captained by Mrs. Geo. Anderson, and with the administration in the hands of Miss Hester McLeod as secretary, left no weak spots in the organisation. The green-keepers and grounds committee also spared no efforts to have the links in perfect order.

Hit and Be Dammed.
Mr. E. S. R. Piesse was the official starter, getting everyone off on Tuesday afternoon to time, in the four ball best ball bogey. Visitors soon found the innocent looking traps on the inner nine, where danger of collapse haunts one until the 15th is safely negotiated. The outer nine are straightforward hitting, except for the dam hole.

An amusing incident occurred at this hole. A low marker approached the tee. Her caddy stepped forward and from his pocket drew an old ball offering it to his patron with much solicitude. (Probably he had studied the law of averages). The water level after the carnival was visibly risen. Miss A. Hardie and Mrs. Bert Ladyman, of Broomehill, on long handicaps, romped home with eight up, followed by Mrs. Hendry and Miss P. Timms, Gnowangerup, with seven up.

Bleak Beginning.
On Wednesday morning at 8 o’clock, in bleak, cold driving wind and rain the real business commenced. The teams players set out to do battle for their respective clubs. There were eight teams entered Albany, Gnowangerup, Broomehill, Narrogin, Wagin, Katanning, Pingelly and Dumbleyung, The Katanning Club, with a gross score of 763, won the Caris Shield, and the Teams’ Cup. Mrs. Parkes, Mrs. Nicholas, Miss Audrey Wingrove and Miss Shirley Anderson receiving silver cups for the best four scores.

The handicap event went to Gnowangerup Club with 589 net and with it the Arnold Piesse trophy. Wagin were runners-up with 621 net.

The scores were:
Championship teams (gross scores). Katanning, 763; Narrogin, 770; Gnowangerup, 807; Albany, 811; Wagin, 821; Broomehill, 832; and Pingelly, 837. Handicap scores were: Gnowangerup, 589 net; Wagin, runners-up, 621; Katanning, 627; Narrogin, 630; Broomehill, 632; and Pingelly, 651, and Albany, 669.

Singles Championship. The open singles championship resulted in a tussle between Mrs. A. H. Parkes, Katanning, and Mrs. McQualter, Goomalling. Their gross scores were 86 each on Wednesday morning over 18 holes. On Thursday the weather was more boisterous, but undaunted by rain, hail or gales Mrs. Parkes continued her way up the fairways to attain the championship by two strokes on Mrs. McQualter. Mrs. Parkes recorded 86-90-176 and Mrs. McQualter 86-92 178.

This was Mrs. Parkes’ second victory in the open and Great Southern singles. In 1931, when the meeting was previously held in Katanning, she attained championship honours. The Great Southern championship also went to Mrs. Parkes with Miss Jean Anderson, Albany, runner-up. Mrs. McQualter was not eligible to compete in this event.

On Thursday afternoon the golf-house was packed with visiting golfers and spectators to witness the presentation of trophies. The president, Mrs. Ross Anderson, asked Mrs. F. H. Piesse to do the honours. Facing a table glittering with the gleam of silver and the twinkling of crystal and delicate China, Mrs. Piesse presented the following trophies:

Teams’ championship, Caris Bros shield and teams’ cup: Katanning Club, captained by Mrs. Geo. Anderson.

Finale.
Golf clubs, raincoats, and trophies were packed away, and a happy stream of golfers boarded cars to speed their way over slippery roads, tackling casual water, and incurring heavy penalties in bogs, etc., to reach their homes, all relating happy incidents of the outing.

The heartiest appreciation of the Katanning Association goes out to their secretary, Miss Hester McLeod, in the excellent and efficient handling of the administration of the organising of the successful carnival. Mrs. Ross Anderson and Mrs. Walters presided over an excellent commissariat department, providing sustenance to strengthen players to meet the heavy gales beating down the fairways.
