Golf has been played in Katanning from its earliest days. The Katanning Golf Club was established on Saturday, 20 June, 1903 and it’s first season commenced on Saturday 4 July, 1903. The original nine-hole course was situated where O’Callaghan Park is now located before it moved to its current position.

The O’Callaghan Park course remained abandoned for several years before reopening as the Richard Hooper Golf Course which in turn also relocated to Nine Pines at the top of Trimmer Road. It moved again and was renamed Forrest Hills Golf Club.

A very enthusiastic meeting of those interested in the formation of a Golf Club was held on Saturday last at the Royal Exchange Hotel. Mr A. Gee was voted to the chair.

It was proposed by Mr J. C. Cook, seconded by Mr G. A. Glenn, that a club be formed to be styled the “Katanning Golf Club.” Carried unanimously. On the proposition of Mr H. J. Golf Links Season Opened

Southern Districts Advocate
24 June, 1914

Golf.

The local links were officially opened on Saturday afternoon last by the President of the Club, Mr Arnold Piesse, M.L.A., in the presence of a good muster of golfers and their friends. Afternoon tea was kindly provided by the club’s lady members. An approaching and putting competition for ladies was won by Miss Chipper, and a similar event for men was won by Mr Perkins. The club gave trophies in each case.

The local golf club has drawn up a lengthy list of events for competition during the season. This week a handicap stroke competition for men and also one for ladies will be played off, for two trophies presented by the president. Men will play 18 holes and ladies 9 holes.

The Katanning Golf Club sent a team to Wagin on Monday last to play a match against the Wagin Golf Club. A most enjoyable day was spent on the links, and the home team proved a bit too strong on their own course. The visitors were most hospitably treated by the Wagin golfers. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, and in the evening Katanning’s representatives were the guests of the winning team at a dinner at the Federal Hotel.

The following are the results:
Foursomes.
Young and Perkins (K) lost to Davies and Thomson (W), 3 up and 2 to play.
Hunt and Keillor (K) lost to Hocking and E. H. Spencer (W), 4 up.
Haslam and O’Grady (K) lost to Passmore and Gloster (W), 1 up.

Singles.
Young (K) beat Davies (W) 6 up and 5 to play.
Hunt (K) beat Hocking (W) 2 up and 1 to play.
Perkins (K) lost to Thomson (W) 2up.
Keillor (K) squared with H. F. Spencer (W).
Haslam (K) beat H. F. Spencer (W) 4 up.
O’Grady (K) lost to Love (W). 1 up.
Wagin won by six matches to two.

During the afternoon Mr D. C. Young put up the fine score, of 38 for the nine holes, which is bogey for the course and is also the record for the links. A very fine round indeed especially as the greens were far from good.
